this is just a nice picture, so i was hoping it can be narrowed down at least to family level. taken at koenigsforst, a forest near cologne, germany, june 1, 2009. body length was probably around 6 mm.

is this hairy extrusion above the haltere the calyptra? well, the good thing when you know nothing about a field is that you can learn a lot easily ;)

cheers!

For what I know Acalyptrates have a tiny calyptra (as this one, Lauxaniids are in fact Acalyptrates) and Calyptrates (Muscidae etc) have a big one. And yes, this is Lauxaniidae Smile

hrmph... :) i was thinking because of the long hairs it's a calyptrate, and thus considered the thing with star-like hairs above the haltere a "big enough" calyptra.

thanks for the info!

I recommend you this website: http://www.ento.c...ssary.html. You can either click on the fly parts in the photo or on the glossary in the side bar, and you get quick information.
