Please don't leave, Paul, but think Nikita is right - the pale wavy hairs are certainly characteristic of Pollenia. Ferran - can you tell us where the fly was photographed? It may help us to put a species name to it. Tony Tony ---------- Tony Irwin |

I have included two more pictures of the fly. I think is the same because it was taken in intevals of minutes in the same place, a citrus orchard near Valencia a few days ago, on 28 June 2006. You can count me into the Pollenia gang. I suspect that this fly is very 'fresh' and this is fly the pattern is so strong. It even has all the yellow curly hairs on thorax. They rub off quite easily and most specimens aren't nearly as hairy as this one.

What puzzles me about this Pollenia is the colour of the hairs. I've always found them to be golden or brown (see the attached photo I took last week). The strong abdominal pattern and the colour of the hairs were my reasons not to opt for Pollenia in the first place. Still, Kahis may well be right (the wings look fresh in the first pic as well) and the hairs may still have to reach their full colour. I guess Pollenia it is.

I guess, there is a good chance that both the female of Ferran and the male of Tony belong to Pollenia angustigena. I do not see more than 1 big ad-bristle on the middle tibia, which is a feature of very few species among Pollenia. Jan HC Velterop. |
