I thought this was a Scathophaga stercoraria but apparently I'm mistaken Sad Can someone point me in the right direction, and if you have the patience, explain the distinguishing features.

Size is about 8mm, collected on a windowsill in Brussels, Belgium.

This is Muscidae, Phaonia subventa or rufiventris, male

It's hard to say what the difference is between yours and Scathophaga because to people who study either group of flies they are just very different! Wink Have a look at the photos in the gallery (Scathophagidae vs. Muscidae) and I am sure you will spot where you went wrong.

Thanks for the ID, there is a lot to learn. I've ordered a copy of the "European Families of the Diptera" but I have no doubt there is a long way to go ...
