First tachinidae of the year for me, this beautiful Tachina ursina. Is it a male ?
This year, I've seen one for the first time in my garden (on Cornus mas and after in grass, 19-3-2009), then one a little bit further (31-3-2009) and yesterday at least 3 . in the " Fagne of Malchamps"(Belgium, 2-4-2009).

It's a very lovely and distinctive fly (hairy tachinid with those white bars on the tergites flying in March&April) but I don't think the host is known for sure. If I were to guess though I would say it is probably large lepidopteran larvae (Noctuidae or Notodontidae), like many of the other Tachina spp. and it possibly overwinters as a pupa. But I hasten to add that this is pure speculation - just an educated guess. Smile
