Good morning,
this fly sat on my window on November 12, 2008, in Germany, Schleswig-Holstein, northern Hamburg suburbs.

It was c. 7 mm long, the golden shining thorax is divided by 3 distincitve, elevated white stripes.
Legs: femur and tibia light brown, tarsus dark brown, almost black. Length of the legs equal to size of body (incl. head).
The eyes sit very closely together.

My 350 pages book on flies does not show any fly which is marginally similar. Is it possible to classify the fly family or even give it a distinctive name?

Thanks a lot in advance for taking a look and your help.
Best regards,
Sabine

It might ring bells with someone but, as we say, "a picture tells 1000 words" ... and I can't see any picture Grin

Good morning,
@Chris: I had to upload the picture several times until it was shown
@Nikita: thanks a lot for your classification to muscidae and your estimation that it might be Phaonia fuscata!
Have a nice day and
best regards,
Sabine

Looks like a Phaonia sp. that has been attacked by an entomophagous fungus - hence the swelling and characteristic "legs stretched out" posture Smile

Hi Chris,
thank you for adding this interesting aspect. I'm also interested in fungi, even in those that are not edible, especially those fructificating on wood.
Have a nice rest of the day and
best whishes
