This is not my picture but was taken in Trinidad as a picture of a "large mosquito". I'm using it with permission of the owner just for ID purposes.
Any ideas on what it is ? seems to be a cross between a cranefly and mosquito Smile

Perhaps Limoniidae ?

Tipuloidea, possibly Limoniidae. There are snouty Limoniids even in Europe. In Japan I found Elephantomyia, which has an extremely long proboscis (photos in my Japan gallery).

Thanks for the further ID info dhalma Smile

Should add the original photographer is relieved by the ID - they have been having outbreaks of Yellow fever and Dengue caused by mosquitos Smile
