Hello!

Could it be the male of Bibio johannis ?
Size: ~10mm
Locality: NW-Hungary; Habitat: open sandy grassland
Date: 19.03.2009.

Compared to my recently posted specimen, it surely is B johannis male.

Your second picture (15. March) is great, now I see the identity. Thank you Walter.

The photograph 2 is not Bibio johannis, but B. femoralis, a much rarer Central and South-Eastern European species, which may appear very early in the spring, even in February in some regions. Notice the pear-shaped first tarsomere of hind legs which is very characteristic for this species. In contrast, the first tarsomere of B. johannis although also inflated is parallel-sided (compare with photograph 3 of recent post by Andreas Haselboeck, which is clearly b. johannis). The photo graph 1 above may also be B, femoralis but hind tarsi are not well visible and the identity of this specimen is not certain.
On the other hand, photograph 2 of recent post of P. Walter is also clearly B. femoralis, and not B. johannis.

Thank you very much for the detailed and interesting answer.
The two pictures are two specimen, so the first could be B. johannis and femoralis as well (I have not got better photo). I am lucky with the second one.
