Today from rank grassland on shingle, Rye Harbour, UK. I presume given the date and the lack of orange markings on the abdomen that this is Gonia picea?

Beware, the lack of orange is not reliable (happens sometimes with ornata). But I agree, this seems to be picea Theo |

First tachinid - and such a nice one too!! Let's hope this is a sign of good things to come I have never caught a Gonia in the wild ... they seem to be restricted to particularly wild areas and it's probably a bit too built-up around me in the Thames Valley.

There seem to be a few around here at the moment. On the 16th I netted one from male Salix flowers, with one or two higher up that I couldn't reach, and yesterday there was this one and at least one more. If it is definitely G. picea then these are first for the reserve, though there is alo a record of G. ornata from the same place from about ten years ago. I love my job. |
