This big fly buzzed around me for a while and then landed on my shoe. It is about 20mm long and I think it is Sarcophagidae but can't find a match. Love the wrap around sunnies. Anyone know this one.

It looks like Tabanus, but I doubt it. There is a strong appendix to vein R4+5, which is unusual in Tabanus. Only 4 species in Australia, all of which have a broad frontal stripe (index < 3). It seems to be smaller here. Moreover, the eyes are hairy, which occurs in only 1 species out of these 4, umbripennis, which it is clearly not. My guess would be some Dasybasis. There seems to be a vestigal ocellar tubercle, supporting this. Dasybasis of Australia still need to be revised. Theo |
