Hi, Here is a fly that I had superficially classified to be a Gymnosoma, but at a closer look neither antennae nor wing venation match this genus. In the gallery I did not find a comparable taxon. Ha - this was simpler than expected. Obviously the dark pattern of the abdomen tip is greatly variable. I shall keep that in mind. The females are completely black, as I remember. Many thanks, Chris. |

Yes, females are black and the male abdomen colouration is usually a bit variable but the black pattern widens towards the tip. But in general they are much smaller than most Gymnosoma spp. and they have much smaller antennae ![]() |
