These flies were really abundant in a cave we visited on weekend (7th February). Also, there were a lot of pupae also, on the walls of the cave and on the floor also. This is quite a long and big cave, and the flies were mostly near the entrance. Can someone determine them?

I looked it up in a checklist and from this cave three Heleomyzids are recorded: Gymnomus caesius, Heleomyza captiosa, and Heteromyza atricornis. I think than it must be H. atricornis. Can anything be said about the pupae? |

Hello, because Andrzej is busy, i try to say somethink about your flies. I think it is not possible to determine species from these photos (I need frontal view to mail), but from caves I know only H. atricornis (my own experience and literature too). Katka |

Attention please !. The gena is very small (you can compare with specimensof H.atricornis from the Diptera Gallery). Hmm... It is better to ID as Heteromyza sp. Andrzej

Hello Andrzej, I dont understand your attention  . The gena of Heteromyza males are always smaller than females. In diptera gallery are only females and i think the third photo from pwalter is a male.Katka |
