I found this recently: The Mosquitoes, Gnats, Craneflies, Midges and Flies of the Northern [United] States by Edward Knobel, 1897, all 64 pages scanned and available online. http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/16766

Lovely line drawings, keys to genera and simple descriptions of species. Wonderful English names. Well worth a look, and may still be useful.
