Seen at Mount Tolmie, a rocky viewpoint with grass and scrubby trees, within the urban area of Victoria, Vancouver Island, on 19 July 2008. I assume that it's a Bombyliid, but can anyone give a better identification and any other information?

I'd guess this is an Anthrax irroratus from the wing pattern. It is a species that occurs in forested areas throughout most of North America.

Thanks Tony. I think you're right. Now I've got a name for it I have been able to find other images on the internet. |
