Certainly a tachinid - looks like Phyllomya volvulus to me Smile

Thanks Chris. I'd sort of got it down to either Phyllomya or Gastrolepta anthracina, but couldn't really decide which it was. What are the distinctive features on this image?

Well, I haven't keyed anything off the photo but the shape and stance (long and thin with long legs) coupled with the fine bands of silvery-grey dusting against a shiny black base colour all point to Phyllomya but it would be nice if Theo agreed with me Grin

I'm sorry, I'm in the Gastrolepta-camp.

The head profile does not fit Phyllomyia, the yellow wing base is missing (the yellow you see here are the calyptrae, not the wing base) and the dusting of thorax is different.

Have a look at the gallery.
It it subtle, agreed

Theo

Thanks Theo and Chris. Posting this thread reminded me of a similar fly which I trapped this year and couldn't make my mind up on - I checked that and it looks more similar to Gastrolepta. One more to send to you I think Chris!
