Can I say this is Anthomyia procellaris, or do I have to cf it? Female, from central lowland France (la Brenne), 1 September 2008, damp woodland, 5mm. Susan R Walter attached the following image: [64.17Kb] Edited by Susan R Walter on 16-11-2008 16:23 Susan |

The large number of dorsal setae on hind tibia suggest Anthomyia imbrida Rondani female |

I have just checked my collection, and the postsutural lateral black mark (over the wing base) is much more like Anthomyia procellaris than imbrida; also I find that some females of procellaris have quite a few hind tibia setae. So I can't give a positive det from a photo. The females of Anthomyia are quite difficult and even with specimens before one, it is sometimes a problem. as the hind tibia are under the wing membrane, it is impossible to count them exactly. |
