I think this is a male mosquito, but it shows lots of Chaoborid features (apart from the mouthparts.) Can someone tell me what genus or species are we seeing here? It looks like an Aedes s.l. (possibly Ochlerotatus), but an intersex individual - never seen one before and don't know much about them, but they do occur.

Even if we can't put a species name on it, I think it's worth putting this in the gallery - it's so unusual.

I have to admit to a serious oversight with this thread - the specimen is not an intersex, as I suggested, but a typical Aedes cinereus male. I had overlooked the fact that in this species the male palps are as short as those of the female. My only (feeble ) excuse is that I've never met this species personally. Apologies to anyone that I've confounded with my speculation.

Nice to have a mosquito identified. I have not regularly seen this species.
