Hi to all! I'm not sure enough to be satisfied. Is this Villa hottentotta or member of a different species? Probably V. venusta but i have no specimens and there could be similar species that i am unfamiliar with. |

Hi David, thank you for your answer! In the catalogue of the diptera in Bavaria these Villa-species are enlisted: Villa cingulata (Meigen, 1804) Villa circumdata (Meigen, 1820) Villa hottentotta (Linnaeus, 1758) Villa humilis (Ruthe, 1831) Villa modesta (Meigen, 1820) Villa occulta (Wiedemann, 1824) Villa paniscus (Rossi, 1790) Unfortunately the only one of those with a picture in the gallery here is V. hottentotta. V.venusta is not included. Could it be it's an old name or synonym for one of the enlisted-ones? The V. venusta pics in the gallery (matching mine quite well) are from Nauders/Tyrol, which is in the wrong corner of Tyrol (opposite to the Tyrolean northern border, which is only a few kms away from the location where I found my fly) for me to say maybe it spent a visit in Bavaria :-) Best greetings Rupert Edited by Rupert Huber on 02-11-2008 09:55 |

i am afraid the situation if far more confused. Of the list you give venusta=circumdata. According to Evenhuis & Greathead 1999 circumdata is an unjustified replacement name for fasciata Meigen, 1804. However, Chandler, 1998 following Francois 1968 decided that the British species formerly known as circumdata Meigen, 1920 should be known as venusta Meigen 1920. The reasoning is that the type of circumdata is a female whereas that of venusta, described on a following page of the same publication, is a male. Make of all that what you will! |
