Those bristles are spines. You can see actual setae on those spines.

these funky spines can be either protection from a bird or lizzard predatioin or an aid in sexual selection, or both as it sometimes happen. It would be nice anyway to see these flies mating or tripleting with these spines (a female and two males abve)
