Photographed on September the 13th at the water's edge on the banks of the river Strymon in Northern Greece. About 4-5 mm, maybe a bit bigger. I would love to know more about it.

Ochthera schembrii male. Predatory as adult and larva - adults feed on any flies they can catch - very often chironomids. The mantid-like forelegs are used to catch prey, with the tibia sweeping the victim to empalement on the femoral spines. I'm not sure about the mechanics, but the system is very effective!

Thanks guys, It certainly looks like it means business. Tony you seem pretty sure of the determination so I take it I don't need to go out and catch one? Paul, I just sent Milos another bunch of tubes, so they will get to you in time. The diptera list passed 1111 yesterday. Thanks again |

I am fairly sure, but it would be a good idea to take a voucher - there's always the possibility of something new.  The only Ochthera I've seen among the Kerkini material so far is manicata - that's new to the Balkans!

I tried to catch some of this, and of the Lispe I posted pictures of yesterday and got caught in the most incredible storm, and no flies, but I will try again, the river bank is a nice habitat. |
