Hello and good morning, I am new here, because I most recently bought myself a nice camera and now toook pictures of some insects I can't identify. I am a very bad biologist A friend of mine who is koleopterologist thought, that you might probably help me. He said that this one might come from the family of Chironomidae, but what it is exactly he didn't know. It was quite small and red (body maybe 5mm? or smaller even...) and the sun could shine through. Date: 3.9.08 Place: a meadow in southern Germany, near a lake. There was a lot of high grass and some clover around, and lots of reed. But this one sat in the grass. It's able to fly, because it suddenly flew away. I also took a picture of a similar (but a little different one) in green. Thanks a lot! Dagmar from Germany. |

It's certainly Chironomidae - but I don't think we'll be able to take it much further than that.
