Hi,

At beginning of july i have been up in Retezat National Park. In a lot of places i have found galls (rolled leaf) on Dryopteris filix-mas.
From what i have read he causer is an anthomiid Chirosia betuleti.

Are also other species associated with this fern? I ask this because from what i seen on Fauna Europaea is not present in Romania (the closest country in which is signaled is Slovakia) ( http://www.faunae...on1=129180 ).

If is this species and not yet signaled will be good o have some adults i think, how to proceed for this?

First photo: the gall

Thanks for the help,
cosmln

This is particularly interesting to me. If you pick the galls when the larvae are fully grown, place the galls on some damp sand in a container. You might be lucky and the adults will emerge (?when).

I will name any adult males if you send them to me.

There are no recorded Chirosia species bred from Dryopteris, but perhaps this name is a synonym of another genus? C. betuleti has been bred from Athyrium

If you send me your email address by private message I will send you a PDF on a paper I wrote on Chirosia griseifrons and Athyrium

Hi Michael ,

Now i have checked he identity of the fern, indeed this is Anthyrium filix-femina.

I'm not sure if the thing with Dryopteris is not from the book with British Galls (the book is it at office and i will not be there until next week to check).

Hope that this next week i will go up in the mountain and if still find larva i will collect some and hopping to have some adults.

I will send you a PM with my email address.

Also i don't know if you have seen this post: http://www.dipter...d_id=14630 , maybe you are interested in anthomyiid? Maybe i will not be able to put all in one place, maybe some will go at Nikita.

thanks a lot for your help,
cosmln
