I have never seen such a huge Insect besides on a pin. I am not a fly biologist so I have no idea what this is. Google didn't prove very helpful.

Could anyone tell me what this is?

no. this is a Tabanidae - Tabanus. Smile

10 cm?? Frown you mean 10 mm Grin

no! it cannot be. There is no such thing as 10 cm for flies. Smile it is normal to oversize the flies, but I'm sure that there are no flies known with such size. Wink

Another argument: bovinus does not occur on the British Isles.
BUt the picture itself is already most convincing.
