On the Island of Zakynthos in Greece I caught these little (presumably) Tachinids, which have some strange features. I caught them running on rocks thinking they were Sepsids, because they held their wings just like them, however they did not move then as strongly as sepsids do. The size is about 3 to 4 mm. Under the microscope I discovered they were calyptratae flies, but which one? They have a few minute bristles on the meron, but hardly visible, and a swollen subscutellum so I think they could be Tachinids. Big round head and very big mouth opening, costal and subcostal cel are darkened. Could they be Tachinids, and so which one? A Tachinid, possbily Catharosia or some very unusual Phasia (I don't think so), or just possibly Mesnilomyia. I need to see the animals, I don't recognize this species. So Gerard, please take them with you some time we meet. Theo |

Deat Theo, we'll do! Btw are you interested in looking at a lot more tachinidae from all kind of (European) countries? They're from The Netherlands, France, Poland, Greece and others. If so, maybe we should get in contact for an appointment. Greetings Greetings, Gerard Pennards |

So, I've seen them in real 'life' and there was a reason I didn't recognize them: It is Plesina nigroscutellata, described only this year 30.iv by Cerretti & Tschorsnig from southern Europe. New for the 'mainland' of Greece, known from Crete. Terrific find ! Theo |

It gets even better. One male was different, it proves to be the real P. claripennis. That species is new for Europe. Theo |

Sh.....t If I had known these were so interesting, I could have collected several more, there were still several around playing on the rocks. As I said before, I thought they were sepsids, and probably common ones..... Greetings Greetings, Gerard Pennards |
