I don't have much experience at Diptera, but I thought I'd be able to get what I presume to be a Xylotini species. Taken this week on the North Kent Coast in England, near ditches and saltmarsh, it is small Xylota size, probably about 10mm or less.
Thanks for any help, Mick.

Many thanks. I thought it was too chunky for Syritta pipiens and the pale patches at the base of the wings put me off too. This species is so ubiquitous it is not even illustrated in my 'Hoverflies of Surrey' book. How ignorant I am not to know it ! Thanks. M.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
