strange white larvae

Hi I hope you can help me identify this worm (larvae ) I found in the soil while digging some sod up
It was on a rural sandy slope in Melbourne ontario canada
on april 27 2008
this worm had 2 spots on both ends and a pointer of somekind that it used to drag itself around while on my hand it was quite active see attached photos

I'm pretty sure this is an Asilidae (robber fly) larva, but don't know which one.
