Hello,
I photographed this hoverfly in the maquis in Croatia on April 21, 2019.
Is it a Xanthogramma-species and can it be identified more precisely?
Thank you very much, Frank

Hello Frank, it's most probably a Xanthogramma pedissequum.

EDIT: X. dives could be a resembling one in Southern Europe - to be sure, we'll need a ventral view of the fly.

Thank you very much Eric!
Unfortunately I was only able to take this one photo and therefore I have no ventral view.
Best regards, Frank

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol
