Hello,

today I found this pretty wasp in the garden sucking nectar from a creeping thistle, sorry but I don't have a picture from the front. Please help identify.

Best regards, Volkmar

Data: Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia, D-59821 Arnsberg, 235 m, 3.9.2023.

Hello Volkmar, it's a Polistes - and probably P. dominula-group. To be sure we should see frontal and lateral images.
Greetings, Eric Kloeckner

Thank you very much for your support Eric, unfortunately the wasp disappeared after a short time, so I could not take more pictures. Frown

Antennal flagellum seems to be completely bright orange. In that case, it is Polistes dominula.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
