date: 28. Oct. 2022; location: in Hamburg, Germany; in a small nature reserve at a little river with meadows, some trees and shrubs an small ponds; fly sitting on the leaves of reed in one of these ponds; size: 7-10 mm (estimated); probably a fly from the family Sciomyzidae, perhaps Elgiva solicita?
Thank you for any ID help!
Best regards, Volker

Thanks, Fred, for confirmation of the suggested ID.
Indeed, the first specimen was in the sun, the other in the shadow.
Best regards, Volker

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
