Good afternoon,

this fly belongs most probably to the genus Empis, but anyone has an idea of what sticking out of its abdomen? Could it be some sort of parasite?

Photo taken 15 May 2021, Southern Bohemia, Czech Republic.

Thank you, Sezima

Hi Sezima, I think it's a male Empis trigramma - and it's not a parasite - that's one of the organs what makes him a male.
Greetings, Eric Kloeckner

Hi Eric,

well, that's embarrassing... I thought he was infected by a parasite whereas he is completely healthySmile

Thank you, Sezima

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
