Hello,

I photographed this fly near Lago di Campotosto (AQ), Italy, 1300m a.s.l. on May 20th 2022. I think it is a Bibio, but is it possible to identify its species from these photos?

Thank you in advance,
Emanuele

Note the strong vein in posterior part of wing. This can be tricky to see in some lights, but here it is very consistent. Tibiae are pretty dark (though not all black). All point to Bibio reticulatus.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
