Hello,
I looked at the Diptera Gallery to get info about Eristalis tenax. There are pics of completely dark brown ones without the yellow drawing and there are ones with the well known yellow drawing (both indicated asf emale ones). I have an own pic of such a dark brown specimen the wing signature fits 100% according to drawwing.org.

Can expertes explain the meaning of the different colour (completely brown vs. brown with yellow drawing)...

Regards
Lothar

If you google "Eristalis tenax colour variation" you get interesting results, e.g. the papers by Heal (https://www.natur...197924.pdf, https://www.natur...198268.pdf). Also Epistrophe eligans is quite variable as to abdominal markings. You can identify Eristalis tenax by the two vertical hair-bands on the eye (see pictures in https://www.opsu....fly17.html).
Regards, Sundew
