Dear fly forum,
I found this insect today at the inside of a compost-bin lid in my garden.
I find it very similar to a picture of Sylvicola fenestralis in the Diptera Gallery. Could it be identified as such or should I leave it as Sylvicola sp. (or not as Sylvicola at all)?
Thank you for help and a very happy new year to all.
Regards, Niek

Dear Paul,

First of all a very happy new year.
Thank you for your key which was a real eye-opener! I tried to follow it with my pictures as a basis and got stuck pretty soon because many details were not clearly identifiable or unvisible.
Is my conclusion correct that it is Sylvicola but that any further identification is impossible based on my pictures?
May I use this occasion to mention how pleased I am that a helpful person in WAARNEMING.NL - a site that I value very highly as well - guided me to your site? I have learned a lot here during the last six month: I learned especially how little I know of diptera.
Best regards, Niek
