Hi,
Sorry for the bad pictures, but the fly did not allow for more. Wing venation and habitus point to Phasiinae, and the big pulvilli should make it a male. The body colouration, however, does not ring a bell to me. For a male, the fly would be quite unobtrusive... Can it be identified nevertheless? The location was southwestern Germany, 50 km west of Stuttgart.
Thanks in advance, Sundew

Yes, it is a male Phasia. I agree the abdominal pattern looks a bit weird, but Ph. obesa is very variable indeed.

OK, no other option than Phasia obesa. The brownish spot on the thorax is strange. All the obesa males that I have seen until now had at least some grey dusting and clearly visible presutural stripes. Perhaps I should better delete the pictures... Many thanks nevertheless!

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
