Diptera forum
May I remind every once again that this is a Diptera site. I have given the opportunity to post the occasional non-Diptera query but at times it seems that these are taking over, with Hymenoptera and spiders all over the place. I'd be happy to make some webspace available for someone wanting to do another dedicated site but, please, do not forget that this is foremost a Diptera site and that it should remain one.

Thank you!

Setting up another PHP-Fusion forum on a subdirectory? I wonder if one can use the same user accounts to avoid double logins. Just a forum should be enough, and perhaps a FAQ!? It would also be nice if the upload script could check the img width (max 600 px).

Another site could be run from a subdirectory but also from a separate domain. Since it will be a different subject, I will not allow the same user database and the site will run on its own. I can make certain that certain features are copied, though.
I will not enforce the max. image width because in some instances a larger image can be useful. Still, one should expect users not to post images that are too large if it is not needed, especially if they have read the Forum Code of Conduct.

I still see no reason not to limit images to 600 px. Well, you know how Forum Code of Conduct works ... The number of images that is max 600 px is in minority, I think Wink

Do you have more than one FTP account or else it would be hard to set up the site without your assistance.

What forums should there be? I would keep it really simple to start with!? To publish galleries, articles demands a more dedicated site I imagine. Just keep it simple to keep non-diptera ID questions off main diptera.info forum.

- About the forums
- Coleoptera
- Heteroptera
- Lepidoptera
- Odonata
- Spiders
- Others

Any voluntary forum admins?

First: If it turns out that too many disruptions occur because of images that are too wide, a limit can be imposed at any time.
Second: As far as I can tell, I can create unlimited FTP accounts, so there is no problem.
Third: If dedicated sites with forum exist for other of these groups, I see no point why there should be yet another under a subdomain of Diptera.info. Still, if anyone really wants to start a site like Diptera.info for another group (for example because existing sites have no forum, are too regionally restricted or in incomprehensible lingos), he/she is recommended to do that under a dedicated domain name. And keep in mind that at most times managing a site may be a piece of cake and mainly will consist of monitoring the forum, at other times you really may have to act on matters and get things done.

Ok, I thought the main reason was to get non-diptera posts off the main site. I'm not dedicated (or knowledgeable) enough to start a site on any of the families, even though I can help out.

The main reason is still to reduce the number of non-Diptera posts. There are several ways of doing that. Also see http://www.dipter...eadmore=65.

i can be forum CO-administrator Smile for spiders. Smile But I don't know how we can create a new forum... and hasn?t any webspace for that..

You forgot to put Hymenoptera! Pfft

I think Hymenoptera.info would be welcome. Smile (with a forum). The german site has few things. Sad No forum. Sad

If the germans need help setting up an international PHP-Fusion site (on their own domain) I'm sure we (me and/or Paul) can help install it ... the website requires PHP & MySQL.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
