I took this ?Anthomyiid this morning on the edge of mixed forest in N Scotland. I usually ignore this family, but the extraordinary hairs on the sternites make me hope that it is distinctive enough for someone to identify.

Close-up follows.

Change title to Anthomyiidae to attract the experts. We have several species in North America with conspicuous hairs under the abdomen but they are not confined to a single genus.

This has now been identified at NMS as Zaphne caudata.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
