I dug this photo out of my archive. I think it's a
Bombylius discolor, found in Crete, Greece, on April 24, 2005.

This is
Bombylius medius L., generally a more southern species than
discolor and with a uniformly brown abdomen.
Discolor with black-tipped abdomen
