Can anyone confirm that this large pale coloured Tabanid with psychedelic green eyes is Philipomyia aprica?
16.7.09 Lower Anso valley, Spanish Pyrenees.

I doubt it -
Philipomyia aprica is very dark.

Thanks Phil. Might it be P. graeca then which looks paler and is known in the Pyrenees according to one report?

Many thanks Lukasz. Now I've found some photos of Silvius, I can see you are absolutely right, but I can't find much information online to know what species this might be in the Spanish Pyrenees (not very high, maybe 800m). The only spanish record/photo I have found is for Silvius alpina (also known as Silvius vituli) and it looks just right, but I don't know if there are other, similar species it could be. Maybe someone can help?

There are two very similar yellowish Silvius species: S. alpinus and S. algirus. According my knowledge, S. algirus is not known from Spain. I did not see this species, so I cannot solve with certainity ID of this animal, but probably Silvius alpinus. Libor

Many thanks for your advice Libor. I can't find any S. algirus records in Spain on the internet, either, so this probably is Silvius alpinus based on the information I have now.
