Am I correct in thinking that this is one of those male syrphus spec. that cannot be determined from a photograph?

Hoi Elck,
No, not a Syrphus sp., but a member of the genus Epistrophe.
It is a bit difficult to identify it from a photo, but I think it is a Epistrophe melanostoma. The distinguishing characters with E. nitidicollis are not visible in the picture, but it seems that the scutellum is yellow-haired, and that would suggest E. melanostoma.
Also the broad yellow bands on the abdomen are pointing in this direction.
Greetings

Thanks Gerard,

It cought my eye beacuse of the vibrant orangy colours.
The other picture I have shows the same faint yellow hairs on the scutellum.
