Is this fly a Phyto melanocephala? Photographed in the Netherlands 24-5-09. Bergen (N.H.)
A similar fly was determined as Phyto melanocephala on waarneming.nl. But there are differences with the fly on http://www.dipter...d_id=21675
How is that possible?

Best regards Thijs

Male :| I did not know. (Females mostly have smaller eyes)
I mean the colour of the abdomen.
This fly: shiny grey
The other fly: dark and light grey

Sure.
Slightly sexual dimorph.

Moreover, the point of view is totally different, resulting in different visibility of the dusting.
Dusting is best seen obliquely from behind.
These differences can be extremely tricky, when comparing 2 photo's. With a series, such an error can be prevented.

SO.... to me Phyto melanocephala female.

Which is a great find in Bergen NH.
