Hi, this was a large larva, 'round 4 cm I think. Stratiomyidae? Mountain area, NE Hungary, small temporary pond, May. Can anyone tell me what the beatle is? Hydrophilidae?

I think the beetle is not Hydrophilidae, but Dytiscidae, a predator.

The larva is Stratiomyidae - probably Stratiomys

The beetle is probably a Hydroporus. Was the larva alive? It looks like a cast skin, so the beetle may have been scavenging on it.

Thanks for everyone! Yes, the larva seemed to be a cast skin or maybe long dead.

The beetle is about 8 mm so too big for Hydroporus. I'll revise that to Agabus or Ilybius.
