Hi All,

Can some one assist with an Id or family for this small fly (8mm long) it was on Alliaria petiolata (Garlic Mustard) in my Garden in Southern England.

Hi Chas.
It is Sylvicola (punctum?), Anisopodidae.

I'm sorry.
1. punctata, not punctum
2. It is not S. punctata. So, Sylvicola sp.

Hi Jan

Thanks for that, I was wondering about Sylvicola fenestralis as I have just been reading that this and S. punctata are the two common species in England, although S.cinctus has also been recorded.

Is there a visable distinguishing feature between these two or does it require a specimen and a microscope ?

Hi Chas,

With suggesting the name Sylvicola cinctus I may have been jumping to conclusions. Have a look at the following:

This will give you some answers.

Gut feeling says fenestratus... but I have not checked with the key. Sorry, no time as I am almost leaving. ;)

Hi Jan,

Thank you for the key, it is a little technical for me as there are terms that I do not understand so it will have to wait until tonight when I get home and can spend some time checking the terms as well as the pictures against the key.

Many thanks for every ones assistance
