According to my lists somebody has already given me three names for this family, probably Paul, possibly David. Anyway I would be interested in getting a copy of a key if there is one.

The three species determined so far are

Odinia boletina - (Zetterstedt, 1848)
Odinia czernyi - Collin, 1952
Odinia maculata - (Meigen, 1830)

My specimen today has rather swollen hind femora, clear wings and striped legs.

My thanks to whomever replies.

I think there is no good key available for Odiniidae at the moment. Therefor it is difficult to get a proper identification. Phil Withers is working on a revision. I think he will appreciate additional material.

In the Finnish diptera discussion list there was a "hand-made" draft key of the Finnish Odiniidae a couple of years ago. That covered the 5 Finnish species of the family.

If somebody is still interested, I could translate it here in English some misty autumn day.

Of course we are interested. Deposit it on www.online-keys.net. ;)

More than interested! Tomorrow I am putting up ten home-made beer traps in some promising nature reserves with the main aim to catch some odiniids!

Sorry for the late respons, but I'm also very interested.

@Viktor: Did you already catch Odiniidae? I collected Odiniidae in my beer trap from 19.iv-19.vii.2009 (187 specimens). After that I didn't collect Odiniidae anymore.

Probably it is already autumn and there might even be some mist in the air, so I translated the above-mentioned Odiniidae key in English.

However, at first sight I couldn't grasp how to use that on-line-key system Paul recommended, so those who are interested could perhaps contact me privately and I could send the file to them via e-mail?

I will create the key for you tomorrow, so you can have a go at it and test the accompanying help system.

Thank you, Paul, but a deep mystery for my slow brains remains: How exactly does this on-line-key site work? Should I write the key there somewhere or post it to you first?
Om the left there was the text: "Help File Key", but I didn't get anything helpful out of it.

Could it be easier if I just mailed the key to someone who is familiar with the system?

See where you can get when you follow this link: http://www.online...?key_id=17. You need to be logged in to be able to open it and atm it is just you and me who can open the link.

Well, now I think I got somewhere, thanks...

I'll try to write something resembling Odiniidae key couplets to these boxes some day in September.

The message above cancelled - the key is available only for private use, being not for public circulation in the net.

I regret for any inconvenience this hassle may have caused.
