In the beautiful sand hills of New Mexico, where Prairie Chickens were dancing their mating dance, came this interesting fly. Can someone offer me some ID guidance?

Family Therevidae, but I think it will take someone from your side of the Atlantic to put a name on it.

The web isn't the best guide but take a look at Ozodiceromyia nanella
Different femora but the genus looks right or at least close.

I'd put my money on Asilidae, there is an inderntation in between the eyes, typical for Asilids and not present in Therevids.

This is clearly an asilid fly. Eric Fisher ID it to the genus Laphystia. It is a male.
