Becker, 1918, placed the two names in synonymy, and the majority of dipterists followed him, with
Rhaphium discolor Zetterstedt, 1838 having a priority. Unfortunately, this species was described by a female, and the Nearctic Catalog (2004) considered this synonymy questionable. Fortunately, nobody wrote that
Rhaphium discolor is an "unrecognized" or "doubtful" species. It is the commonest species of the group (former
Porphyrops) in Scandinavia, and it is better to consider the types of the two names (both are present in the Lund Museum) belonging to the same species -
Rhaphium discolor.
