Hello,

I photographed this fly in Bazzano (AQ), Italy on May 21st 2021. I think it is a Tabanidae, but is it possible to identify its genus or species from these photos?

Thank you in advance,
Emanuele

A male somewhere near Tabanus promesogaeus. THe hairs on vertex are very long, confusing.

Thank you Theo! I'm not familiar with the identification of these flies, so I'm probably overlooking some features, but what's unusual about this specimen's vertex hairs? According to this key https://www.resea..._Tabanidae, T. promesogaeus has "Vertex covered with long dark hairs".
