Germany, Baden-Württemberg, district Karlsruhe, Karlsbad-Spielberg, in a garden, ca. 5 mm, 340 m, found date 16.05.2021; Is this hoverfly determinable - Cheilosia spec.? Thanks

Cheilosia is very difficult with only few species easily recognizable... In https://books.goo...&hl=de p. 55 you can try to find out a group - might be Variabilis-group if the legs are really black, but the "knees" seem to be pale... So, this one is not for me. Besides, Cheilosia pictures should always include a good face profile, which is important for ID. And it always pays to look at Steven Falk's Syrphid pages, you get a lot of information (https://www.flick...690619935/).

this is a Pipizella sp., male. Note the flat face.
