a 5 mm male at a banana bait in our garden (northwest Germany) last week.

The common groups with plumose arista are Hylemya and Hydrophoria+Zaphne. (And Eustalomyia which looks different, and maybe a Leucophora which also looks different.)

Thanks, John! Hylemya and Hydrophoria are very common here. But this one looked different to me, and was considerably smaller.
