Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Opomyzidae

Location: Hungary
Habitat: swampy ditch, dense vegetation
Size: Small, ~2-3mm?
Date: 2007-07-12

This fly lays an egg on the leaf. I've Never seen it before, what is it?

Nope, not Ulidiidae. It's Opomyzidae, something like Geomyza sp.
I'm sure Jan Willem can tell us more! :D

Gerard is right it is a specimen of the genus Geomyza [Opomyzidae]. My best guess would be a female of Geomyza martineki, but sternite 8 should be studied to get a positive identification. If you really want to know the identity of species like this, you should collect specimens.

However, I never collect any specimen whereas I must rest satisfied with only the genus level!
