Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Tabaninae 2015-V-21 (= Hybomitra lasiophthalma)

With hairy eyes and several eye bands this is either a 
Hybomitra or one of the 
Tabanus that looks like a 
Hybomitra.

Hi John!
Yes, it's a Hybomitra species. Was it large?  With these peculiar spots on the wing membrane I think it should be a male of H.lasiophthalma, at least I came to this result with Teskey's, 1990 keys...

Thank you.  I am not confident using Teskey's keys for male Tabaninae.  Wings usually obscure details of the abdominal pattern he uses.  In this case the spotted wings in combination with the orange-sided abdomen should be sufficient for ID.

The female is lasiophthalma for sure and the male might very well be also !
