I found this one in the East of France in mid-october. Is it possible get an ID at the species level ? (Chorisops nagatomii ?).

The specimen show here is indeed a female Chorisops nagatomii. Nice find!

Based on distribution
nagatomii is kmost likely, but there are two other European species that are very similar of which the distribution is not very well known. They have been recorded from the Mediterranean but how far to the north they might occur...?

Hello,
There are, in the updated Italian checklist, three species strongly resembling C. nagatomii, they are: C. tunisiae, C. masoni and C. caroli.
The updated checklist also gives a key to separate them. However, apart from C. tunisiae, they are only distinguishable by examining the genitaliae. Also in females. If you want a positive identification, you would have to collect specimens. I can make the paper (Mason, F. 2013. Updated Italian checklist of Soldier Flies (Diptera, Stratiomyidae)) available to you (or anyone else) if you'd pm me.

The paper is freely available on the net (there is a link in the forum, I think) but the key is seriously flawed by wrong references to figures and some unclear features used that are not visible in the relevant figures.
